Just like fashion, health claims, and the economy, colors follow trends. Each year brings new attention to a portion of the color wheel, and it is important to stay abreast of these trends as an interior designer. After all, being trendy is highly valued by consumers and entire rooms are redecorated to reflect what is “in” versus what is rapidly becoming “out.” A major challenge in design is predicting the trends and recognizing what may become a classic and timeless design, and what will be dated before it is even finished being implemented in a design.
So what are the colors of 2013 and why were they chosen? Each color evokes its own mood, energy, feeling, and overall vibe intended to be played out throughout the year. They are a prediction of sorts, but whether the predictions are accurate has very little bearing on their popularity in the design world.
Pantone is considered the leading color trend creator in all color-based industries: design, fashion, makeup, etc. For 2013 the Color of the Year is Emerald. Intended to represent liveliness, radiance, and lushness, Emerald brings elegance and a sense of luxury to a room. As for the intended feelings associated with Emerald? A sense of well being, harmony, and balance will supposedly follow utilizing this jeweled green.
Also a green—though a less vibrant shade—this Color of the Year softens the mood to simplistic prettiness. More mid-century modest rather than modern flashy, Aloe is intended to mimic its plant inspiration by soothing and calming a room’s energy. It also nicely complements neutrals and pastels, making it a versatile choice in the design scheme.
Lemon Sorbet’s selling point as a Color of the Year is its role as a “transitional” color. Benjamin Moore has predicted that 2014 will be the year of the pastels, and as such Lemon Sorbet is a perfect bridge from the current saturated color tones. The color brightens an atmosphere without overloading the senses, akin to tea’s mild compared to coffee’s powerful dose of caffeine.
Color trends are fun to incorporate and really make a space feel trendy and fashionable. Even so, when designing a room, it is important to keep in mind that trends fade and the colors of today will be replaced a year from now. Thus it is a good tactic to use Colors of the Year primarily as accent pieces such as lamps, clocks, throw pillows, and such or as part of a more overall color scheme (for example Aloe lends itself well to pastel yellows, blues, and browns that can characterize a child’s room or nursery). Knowing the color trends is exciting and inspiring, and integrating them into your designs will keep your work fresh and your clients happy.

When you put your home on the market, it is important to make it look its best for potential buyers by home staging. And one of the first parts of the house a buyer will notice is the floor. Whether your floors are hardwood, carpet, linoleum, or tile, they should be as clean as possible before showing your home, and you can automate the process with the use of automatic vacuums you can find online.
Start by wiping down with a microfiber-dusting pad to remove debris and dust. Next, apply a hardwood floor cleaner to the microfiber pad and rub the cleaner into the wood. You can then apply a floor polish to the wood for an extra shine and a layer of protection, but make sure that the floors aren’t too slippery for walk-throughs.

Otherwise use a carpet cleaning machine and place open containers of baking soda around the carpeted area to absorb any smells. Finish the process with a vacuum run.
The easiest of flooring types to clean, linoleum can be cleaned with basic soap and warm water. Again make sure the floor is dry before showing your home to avoid people slipping.
Begin with vacuuming the floor, and then mop it with a mixture of equal parts hot water and vinegar. You can also use a specifically made tile cleaner. Have another bucket of water to rinse the floor after the vinegar mixture. Make sure to clean in the grouting as much as possible, as this part of the floor usually looks the dirtiest.
Using the right cleaning method is the best way to protect your floor from looking damaged when you show your home. Clean floors are of the upmost importance when staging your home for potential buyers. They drastically improve the look and cleanliness of your home, and this improvement increases your home’s value. It may be a time investment, but the returns you will see in your home offers will be worth the effort.

When choosing accessories for home staging, the first thing you want to do is analyze your inventory? What types of shapes and sizes do you have? It is important when accessorizing that you choose accessories that vary in size, height and weight, and is important to group each of these items together in variety when staging a home. Make sure you have a wide variety of greenery too. Here are a few tips that will help you incorporate all of your accessories in your home and make your home staging project stand out about the rest.
Table Top Arrangements
Accessorizing a table top arrangement calls for frames, a lamp, candles and other creative accessories. Keep in mind the number one rule when grouping these items together. The rule of threes. The basic idea of this rule is that the objects are arranged or grouped in odd numbers. Accessorizing in odd numbers makes the room more appealing, memorable, and effective than even-numbered pairings. Even adding plants will help to break up the monotony and add interest to your vignette.
The rule of three is especially important when hanging and grouping art on the walls. If you want the overall display to appear as one to the trained eye then stick with the same or similarly shaped frames or mirrors. You can also add contrasting shapes and sizes if you want to bring attention to each specific piece. You want to keep your wall visually exciting stay creative and keep the rule in mind.
Grouping by Size
Accessorizing by height can be tough. You do not want all of your items to be at the same height. You can keep it interesting by displaying your accessories from large too small or from small too large. You can implement the rule of three when using different sizes as well. The trick is to envision certain things when in their place and look at things objectively. Ask yourself whether you can imagine yourself living there. Keep in mind that you are selling a home, not just a house.

A buyer will usually take note of negatives and this will be high on their list. Don’t overlook the simplest repairs such as leaking taps or stuck kitchen drawers. If you need to, get professional help for the more complicated problems.
Don’t forget cleaning and uncluttering. If you live in the house, make sure you clean every nook and cranny. An unclean house makes buyers feel uncomfortable. Pay extra attention to areas such as the bathroom and the kitchen. If you can’t seem to clean the fingerprints on the wall, consider giving it a fresh coat of paint. You may have grown used to your untidy garden or exposed household cleaning equipment, but unnecessary clutter like this can lose you the sale. Tidy up family photos and books by dusting and arranging them nearly or storing some of them away. The less clutter you have, the bigger the space will seem.
Don’t neglect neutralizing. If your walls are too bright or patterned, it might make it hard for the buyers to imagine their own things in the house. Paint your walls in a neutral, warm and inviting color scheme such as cream or mocha. Even just a warm white all over would certainly be better than a purple wall.
Never as well overlook dynamizing. By dynamizing, give the room in your house that special look. Make sure that each room clearly conveys its function and purpose. Enhancing the outdoor environment- While summer may seem far away, it isn’t too early to consider accentuating the outdoor environment. More frequently buyers are looking for attractive outdoors spaces that can be used for relaxing and entertaining. Staging with weatherized outdoor furniture is particularly appealing for 2012. It’s also very import to set the scene. For example, add wine glasses or coffee mugs to an attractive throw rug next to a lit outdoor fireplace; or strategically place outdoor plants and accent light to give a lush, welcome atmosphere.

I must admit, when I was first considering home staging, there were some things that had me worried. I knew from watching all the televisions shows that I would love directing a design project from start to finish and watching the incredible difference in the before and afters. But I still wondered how much work would be out there and if I could really make a go of it. What if I put myself out there and no one ever called?

Now I look forward to my work. Gone are the days that I yearned for something different or better. For me, the best part about being a home stager is solving a creative challenge that results in a complete visual transformation.
